Compare protein in Foundation Foods

Read real historical USDA food measurements while preserving units, exact values and missing data.

1. Try a useful comparison

Open the sample explorer and choose USDA Foundation Foods. Search for lentils, inspect the record, then compare it with chickpeas.

The retained sample reports 23.57 g protein per 100 g for dry lentils and 21.28 g for dry chickpeas (rounded here for display). Both are dry foods. Do not compare these directly with cooked portions or treat the figures as dietary advice.

These are selected source records from the April 2026 Foundation Foods archive, not a current API response or a new import.

2. Read the exact measurement

Selected API fields from the saved source record:

{
  "fdc_id": "2644283",
  "description": "Lentils, dry",
  "publication_date": "2023-10-26",
  "protein_g_per_100g": "23.568750000000"
}

Protein is nutrient 1003, in grams per 100 g of food. Keep the amount and ID as strings. The publication date belongs to the food record, not to Waztap’s import or latest check.

3. Distinguish zero from missing

Set the sample’s minimum protein filter to 10. It compares decimal amounts exactly. Search for coconut oil without a minimum to see a measured zero. Canola oil has null in this projection, meaning no accepted measurement. A zero minimum excludes null measurements and includes measured zero.

The API route is GET /v1/foods, with text search and a protein threshold. Food detail includes nutrient measurements and units. The browser sample shows only a few selected fields; it is not the full nutrient response.

4. Review access and coverage

USDA Foundation Foods covers Foundation Foods, excluding branded products and barcode lookup. The dataset page separates the last recorded source check from scheduled-import history.

Choose RapidAPI for request-based plans or Apify for pay-per-event access. Plans on RapidAPI and Apify show RapidAPI plans and Apify prices per completed operation. Follow your listing’s host, authentication and response-schema instructions.
